Vacay: The Netherlands Part 4

Okay peeps..I guess this is the last part in Netherlands..the next day we went to Brussels..
next entry okay..
sape boring..silalah jgn baca..hikhik..kidding!!

Kinderdijk
(kin-der-daik)

After Scheveningen Beach, we actually went to Rotterdam first to look for Hockey stadium..but hubby couldn't find it..and bcoz it was a prompt visit and not in the itinerary..so we dun have the postcode...:(

We went to this place at the end of the day..

My friend told me that in Netherlands the ground level is lower than water level..that's why u can see many canals were built to compensate the water..otherwise it will be flooded..
so for more info guys..I've googled the facts from this website

historie

Kinderdijk
In the Alblasserwaard, the area whereto Kinderdijk belongs, problems with the water household became more and more apparent from the 13th century. To get rid of the excess water in the polders, long canals were dug. These canals are called "weteringen" and you can find them all over Holland.

canals

This method was sufficient only for a few years. When the ground lowered again because of it's structure (veen) and the level of the river raised at the same time, an additional way of keeping the correct level of the water in the polders was necessary.

Windmills
It was decided to build a series of windmills which would pump the water into a reservoir (boezem) until the level of the river had reached a level that pumping the water into the river was possible again.

flood

To control the water completely was never possible and in the past centuries, Holland suffered from floods over 30 times, one more severe than the other, but always a threat to men, women, children and animals.

Floods
The most severe flood dates back to 1421. This flood, called the "Elisabethsflood", was caused by a heavy storm and made the dikes brake. The water from the river flushed into the polders.

Legend
According to a legend, Kinderdijk thanks it's name to a special event during the flood. A cradle with a child on the waves was kept in balance by a cat and stranded on the slope of a dike. The spot where this happened was named Kinderdijk...

Steam and diesel
In 1869, the windmills received assistance from a steam "mill" or pumping station, which was replaced by a diesel pumping station in 1927. The pumping station was not able to function properly in the second world war, because of lack of oil. The windmills proved their usability and functioned again as never before.

Corkscrew
In the seventies a new diesel pumping station was built and this one is still in operation today. This station contains three big "corkscrews" which pump the water out of the polder into the river. At full capacity a total of 1350 m3 water per minute can be pumped through. In 1981 an extension was built which can be seen on the Overwaard side. This electric station has a capacity of 1500 m3 per minute.

Here are some of our picchas..

Eventho tempat ni mcm takde pape..coz it's located in normal housing area, but you'll definitely see that the water level is higher than the ground level..
It's amazing!!!
Begitulah ciptaan Yg Maha Esa..
Sgt menakjubkan..MasyaAllah!!
Go and see it urself!!
InsyaAllah...

Vacay: The Netherlands Part 2

Hi peeps,
Okay let's continue with our vacay story..
malas la nk pening2 kepala nih..

on the 2nd day we went to North..Zaanse Schans
Tempat ni ala2 tourist village..best gak coz blh tgk Windmills and visit cheese factory, bakery and wooden shoe factory..
since we stayed in Delft, so it took about 1 hour to reach here..we passed by Amsterdam again but not in itinerary so tak dpt la nk pusing2 Amsterdam lagi..:(

Netherlands ni kan famous with the agriculture land..so mmg best tgk scenery die..terasa mcm kt Msia..especially lalu kt Higway yg ade farm..ala2 kt Kedah...

Zaanse Schans ni besar..coz ade byk windmills..lupe la pulak ade brp..maybe 10 or more..
Zaanse Schans Museum pun ade..but we all tak pegi..ingatkan kene byr..but everything is free..no entrance fee except parking fee..

This is the diamond factory..name je factory..hehe..
tp malas la nk menjenguk coz mmg tader budget pun..kang terliur je..posing pun jadi lah kan..

Best kan blh tgk real windmill..

Then we headed to the Cheese factory..siap ade demo camane diorang buat cheese and peram..
niat di hati nk beli bwk balik la..
tp price die mak aii..very expensive!!!
seketul cheese tu je around 35 to 70 euro..
Hubby mmg suke cheese, but unfortunately kt sini semua cheese diorang pakai rennet and tader vegetarian cheese..
tgk je laa...

Luckily when we were around there was one demo session for international visitors..that's mean all explaination in English..
That lady tgh demo la how the cheese made..

Area ni siap ade farm lagi..some of the tourist hired bicycle..coz mmg sgt besar..
but we walked around..saje je kasi kids tu penat especially Adib..
and mase jalan2 jumpe ramai gak tourist from Msia..hehe..

Ade jugak small museums around..Antique costumes, coffee museum etc...
but bcoz time was limited we skipped all that..

adib with his giant lollipop..

Kat background tu mmg ade farm..so diorang gune windmill tu utk pump air and control the water system..

another speciality in Holland..CLOG..
kalau dtg sini mmg byk souvenir dlm btk clog..FM pun..
there's clog factory here..
they have demo on how this wooden shoe was made..interesting!!!

From seketul kayu boleh jadi clog..menarik kan...

I didn't buy any shoe okay!!
(eventho shoe addict..hehe..)
so after that we went for some souvenirs shopping and left..

we headed to Madurodam (Mini Holland) which was really interesting..It's located in Den Haag, about an hour from Zaanse Schans..
I'll blog bout it in different entry okay..
sbb malas nk upload pics lagi..

tata..
